WAR VET PASSES AWAY MATTHEW KNOX, AGE 96 SUCCUMBS TO PNEUMONIA ATTACT
FEBUARY 22 ND
Matthew Knox, Civil War Veteran, passed away at 1:30
o’clock Saturday afternoon February 22 nd after four
days of illness of pneumonia. His remarkable vitality was evident until the
very last hours.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mathew Knox never married and from census information seems
to have lived his adult life with his sisters.
Marilyn Bishop-West believes she remembers Velera Ellen Harris-West
telling her that Mathew Knox suffered from a problem with his privates being
enlarged. It may well have been a case of hydrocele
– an accumulation of fluid usually around the testis (from dictionary.com). Since he lived to be 96 years old it obviously wasn’t a life threatening medical condition. Wikipedia.org offers the following information : A hydrocele denotes
a pathological accumulation of serous fluid in a bodily cavity. A hydrocele testis
is the accumulation of fluids around a testicle, and is fairly common. It may
be treated surgically. It can occur in infants undergoing peritoneal dialysis.
A hydrocele testis is due to fluid secreted from a
remnant piece of peritoneum wrapped around the testis … It can also be as a
result of cancer, trauma (such as a hernia), or orchitis.
It can also be the result of a plugged inguinal lymphatic system caused by
repeated chronic infection of Wucheria bancrofti or Brugia malayi, two mosquito-borne parasites of Africa and S.E.
Asia, respectively. As such the condition would be a part of more diffuse sequelae commonly referred to as elephantiasis.
SILAS KNOX
Crossville Chronicle, September 8, 1913, page 8 column 2 – Silas Knox, uncle of MW West arrived from Wisconsin
Sunday to pass the winter. Mr. Knox has
passed several winters here of late years.
He finds the climate more congenial here when Old Borious
is around than in the Badger State
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crossville Chronicle, March 13, 1914 – Mr. Knox, who has
been passing the winter here with M. W. West and family expects to leave for
his home in Wisconsin next week. He will
visit with a sister at Milwaukee, Wisconsin on his homeward way.

As of April 19, 2008 I (Velera West-Pace) can only find on
e online mention of Silas Knox - 1860 census August 6 – NY, NY – there
is a Silas Knox age 23, mechanic, born in Ireland living in the house of a
James Conner, who is wealthy enough to have a servant. Also in this house is James knox age 17 born in Ireland and
Martha Knox age 60 born in Ireland.
Cannot be sure if
this is some of the Knox family I need.

Eliza Knox 51 - wife, born Sept 1848, had 4 children, 3
still living, CANADA, ENGLAND, ENGLAND
Blanche A Knox - 13 – grand daughter, born Oct 1886, MN,
NY, CANADA
*** clue time … 1) Blanche’s Daddy was born in NY and none of the 4 of Charles
and Eliza’s kids were born in NY
2)Bertha wasn’t born in Canada – so at the moment Blanche cannot be
completely tied to any of the 4 kids of Charles and Eliza and she is not their
child … because that would have made the 1900 census say 5 kids and 3 still
living
